Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
