The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Selection in English Test Series Squad
The English team has opted for a twelve-player selection just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise place.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the first Test to determine whether the venue conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are included in the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about their fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to be omitted if Bashir makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five past matches.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only 40 to spin.
Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
On a ground renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on seamers remains the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to offer some spin while also bolstering the lower order.
However McCullum has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having stated earlier this year that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the series.
In July, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they come out and excel out here.”
