The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
