The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a young woman harboring several human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.

A World of Individual Dread

"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to each person."

The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

After a player believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
