The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
