At least 16 people were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
