A person who spiked candy with sleeping medication and distributed them to minors at a youth camp in the area has confessed to sexual offenses against two young males who were nine and 10.

The defendant was taken into custody after eight youngsters and one adult experienced illness at the location in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from that region, pleaded guilty to a series of 17 offences when he appeared at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he denied a single sexual charge he was accused of, which was against a nine-year-old child.

Ruben was held in detention before a subsequent court date on November 28th.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, handling the case, detailed Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She stated his targets were under-privileged children who were participating in a summer program which he managed.

The defendant conducted a "sweet game" with the minors, Mrs Prior said, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She stated to the judge the defendant had played this game with the boys "repeatedly", and minors had earlier experienced illness the following morning.

She said the man had been able to explain this over a long period as the youngsters being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had worries in recently.

The prosecutor continued: "This year his family member had suspicions about what was going on, for good reason.

"They decided to investigate in the man's possessions."

The legal counsel explained materials including infant oil, Vaseline and syringes were located, and his family member contacted the law enforcement about his worries.

She explained the defendant continued to play the "treat game" with six youngsters that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the next day.

"Authorities" had not responded by that time," she added.

The oversight body, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was examining the police response of the situation.

The prosecutor said the youngsters were having difficulty walking due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson notified the law enforcement a second time.

She explained Ruben then conducted the "sweet game" in a space of five minors.
