New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his decision to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, Adams had strongly criticized Cuomo, describing him as a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams reversed course, stating he now plans to campaign alongside Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds strong support.
“I think that it is imperative to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have experienced urban displacement on how critical this election is,” the mayor stated.
Adams continued, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I’m going to go to those communities and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them involved.”
Election Landscape and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the struggle between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose growing support has made headlines globally and symbolized hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.
In a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa announced they would reject Adams’s endorsement if extended.
Months ago, the mayor had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.
During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered reporters inquiring into the support announcement by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's season opener at the famous arena, which occurred right after a heated mayoral debate.
