Mount Mahameru Eruption in Indonesia Prompts Emergency Relocations

The nation's Semeru volcano, the highest peak on Java island, has erupted, covering several villages with falling ash, leading to evacuations and leading authorities to raise the warning to the maximum level.

The volcano in the province of East Java released blistering plumes of fiery ash and a combination of stone, molten rock, and gases that travelled up to 4 miles down its sides several times from midday to dusk, while a thick column of hot clouds rose 1.2 miles into the sky, as stated by Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The outbursts that unfolded throughout the day forced authorities to increase the mountain's warning status twice, from the level three to the top level, the authority said. No casualties have been announced.

Over three hundred inhabitants in the three villages most at risk in the area of Lumajang region were evacuated to official safe havens, as mentioned by a representative for the national emergency management body.

He said that increased activity of the mountain on the afternoon of Wednesday prompted authorities to expand the hazard area to 8km from the crater. People were advised to keep away from an zone along the Kobokan River, which is the route of the lava flow, as scorching gases moved down Semeru’s slopes.

Footage on social media showed a dense cloud of ash sweeping through a forested valley to a waterway beneath a overpass. Locals, some with faces covered with volcanic dust and rain, escaped to makeshift refuges or departed for other safe areas.

Local media indicated that emergency teams were struggling to save about 178 individuals trapped on the 3,676-metre mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The group comprised 137 climbers, 15 porters, seven escorts and six tourism officials, according to an spokesperson with the national park.

“They are currently safe at the Ranu Kumbolo station,” a spokesperson stated in a recorded message. He said the post was situated 4.5km from the crater on the north side of the mountain, which is outside the trajectory of the fiery cloud movement that was observed moving to the south-southeast. Inclement conditions and precipitation required the group to remain overnight there, he added.

The volcano, also called Mahameru, has erupted many occasions in the past 200 years. However, as is the case with numerous of the 129 active volcanoes in the archipelago, tens of thousands of people continue to live on its fertile slopes.

The mountain's previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 individuals were lost their lives and several hundred others were injured and villages were submerged in thick mud. The event forced the evacuation of over ten thousand residents from their homes.

The country, an island chain of more than 280 million people, is located along the Pacific “ring of fire”, a horseshoe-shaped series of tectonic boundaries, and is susceptible to seismic events and volcanic activity.
