The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us locate the video.
We are checking video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the images originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
