Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and declared they should be detained and penalized "by death" following their release of a contentious video.
The Message That Provoked the Controversy
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who in the past acted in defense or security positions.
"As we did, you all took an pledge to safeguard and defend this founding document," the representatives stated in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can decline improper directives, you should reject improper directives. No one has to carry out directives that contravene the law or our national charter."
Trump's Incensed Reply
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a heated reply from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he wrote: "This represents really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their words cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a joint statement censuring the statements.
"Political violence has no place in this nation," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our United States with great loyalty and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against elected officials, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to make certain the safety of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged online messages and withdraw his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement continued.
Representatives' Defiant Response
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also released a statement.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this nation and took an vow to defend and defend the constitution of the United States," they stated. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president views it liable to punishment by death for us to reiterate the statutes," they added. "Our service members should recognize that we have their support as they execute their oath to the constitution and duty to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "All citizens must come together and censure the ex-president's demands for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Further Partisan Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's remarks and published on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the death of elected officials."
He continued: "This represents an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The GOP leader justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of Congress advising military personnel to defy commands, I think that represents without precedent in US history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the crime of sedition" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and determine all that."
White House Statement
During a White House press conference on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the official stated. "You have active officials of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a recorded statement to individuals of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to disobey the president's lawful orders."
She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the chain of command, and if that structure is violated, it can cause people getting killed, it can cause confusion, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially promoting."
