Battlefield 6's Casual Playlist Ignites Heated Debates Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Wait Times

Over the weekend, the game developers introduced a new game mode called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this option mirrors the standard Breakthrough setup but features several key adjustments:

  • Every squad includes only 8 human participants, with the rest filled by 32 bots.
  • Actions performed by human gamers grant complete experience points, while AI activities provide lower rewards.
  • Only two locations can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
  • Elements like Dogtags, accolades, and career stat updates are disabled.

So essentially, this mode delivers on its name: it's a laid-back take of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume there's nothing wrong, as it provides additional choices for players looking for different ways to have fun with the title. But, if video games has shown one thing, it's that you can't please everyone. In other words, a lot of BF6 fans are upset.

Player Responses: Anger to Support

"People want human opponents. Don't repeat the mistakes of your competitors," states one reply to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing idea," says another. At the same time, in community forums, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are going with this game," and someone else lists all the issues they consider to be problematic in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this bot mode."

However, for every complaint, there are players explaining how much they're liking the new mode. "It's very fun to practice, human participants prevent it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," says a forum post. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are players who actually go outside and don't play this game 24/7. Let them strike a balance," adds a different comment. A response via social media explains that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and another applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."

Constructive Criticisms and Community Input

Despite the support, there are constructive reasons to complain about Casual Breakthrough. Some users have highlighted that it could increase queue times even longer for other modes due to the large amount of options currently available. Similarly, some areas often face mostly bots in the current modes. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a minimum number of human gamers, even though it focuses mostly on combat against bots.

Lastly, one of the biggest grievances is that a previous feature was meant to provide complete rewards, even against bots, but that got canned when they attempted to remove bot farms from the mode. Thus this new playlist seems like the community meeting them halfway, according to a Reddit comment. Another labels this addition as the developers "dropping the ball so hard, I had so much fun in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to change it?"

Looking Ahead: Will Changes Occur?

If Battlefield Studios has proven anything so far with Battlefield 6, it is that they're paying attention and responding to player input. Tasks being too difficult were adjusted very quickly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, should analytics shows this recent mode is underperforming to their expectations, they won't be shy to change it again.
