Federal agents announced on Monday that they had successfully thwarted a detailed plan to set off explosive devices at multiple locations belonging to two corporate firms on New Year's Eve in Southern California. The operation came after the apprehension of individuals part of an radical offshoot espousing anti-system and anti-government views.

Details of the Supposed "The Midnight Sun Plan"

Authorities said that one of the accused had drafted a detailed blueprint last month to target at least five business locations across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The locations were likened to "Amazon-type" fulfillment centers.

"The bomb plot was specific," the attorney remarked. "It contained step-by-step instructions to build IEDs … and listed multiple targets across the county of Orange and Los Angeles."

As per the case and legal filings, the plot involved positioning rucksacks packed with intricate pipe bombs that were set to be exploded at the same time at midnight on New Year's Eve at 5 locations. New Year's Eve was identified as an ideal time as the plan stated "celebratory explosions will be going off at this time so explosions will be less likely to be noticed."

An eight-page manually written document, named "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," stated that further locations could be added. The locations were categorized as assets and buildings owned by two separate companies connected with business involving commerce.

Future Plots and Evidence Uncovered

The investigation also indicated that two members in the group had talked about subsequent attacks aimed at immigration enforcement agents and transport with explosives in 2026. One individual allegedly noted that such attacks "would take some of them out and scare the rest of them."

Such discussions were allegedly talked over both at an physical gathering in Los Angeles and through an secure messaging app.

Photos featured in the case file show a remote camp with what investigators said were IED-construction materials strewn across makeshift work surfaces.

The complaint states that the individuals "all brought explosive materials to the site, among them assorted sizes of PVC pipes, suspected potassium nitrate, charcoal briquettes, charcoal powder, powdered sulfur, and items to be used as detonators, among others."
