Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family navigate their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
